It’s been two years since the last true Rock Band game, and Harmonix used that time to offer something awesome for those willing to lay down some extra coin. While the core game hasn’t changed really at all since Rock Band 1, the new additions of a keyboard and 100-plus button Pro Guitar offer gameplay unlike anything before.

For some, this will be just the same ol’ Rock Band. For others, this is the beginning of a whole new way to experience music. It really depends how much you want to put into Rock Band 3. Not just financially (and that is an investment in itself) but also time and effort. Do you want to learn a totally new way to play or would you rather just do the same thing you’ve done for years? That choice really affects Rock Band 3′s overall value. It’s either something completely new and challenging or just more tracks to rock out to. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make.You know how this works. You and your buddies are part of a band. Someone sings. Someone plays guitar. You’ve got a drummer. Everyone hits the right notes at the right time, you score points, you become rock Gods. No big.

Except now there are some new instruments that flip Rock Band on its head.

First up is the keyboard. This thing is solid and has received the seal of approval from IGN’s own resident piano teacher. The only catch is that the keyboard’s half-sized. Other than that, you really couldn’t ask for a better piece of hardware to change the way you play Rock Band.

There is a really gimped-out version of “easy” keyboard for people. You play with just five keys that are all next to each other, which really amounts to playing guitar without strumming. It’s really boring and really not worth the money you spend to get the keyboard. If that’s all you want to do, save your money and just keep strumming the guitar.

EA released the first teaser trailer for Madden NFL 12. And when I say teaser, I mean, it’s really just a tease. The very brief view shows 10 somewhat hard-to-interpret scenes. Each scene hints at something new for Madden NFL 12, but what are these 10 additions? I’m here to play detective.

The easy guess is that there’s a change to the kicking meter. Here’s another possibility: pressure situations added for kickers. After all, a kicker’s true mettle is decided by how they perform in clutch moments. Madden could be adding some sort of “choke” element. After all, the video shows solid Packers kicker Mason Crosby followed by Dan “missed another field goal” Carpenter of the Dolphins.This looks like a new blimp view of the stadium. TV broadcast camera angles and improved stadium lighting and visuals seem to be in the works.One thing missing from Madden has been the ability to surprise the other team with an onside kick. In the past, if you set up for an onside kick, you have to kick the ball onside. You set your formation for a regular kick, you can’t onside it as a surprise. Seems pretty clear from the video that this is changing with Madden NFL 12.EA promised it and here it is. 3D grass in full effect. You can even see the cleat sink in. Can’t wait to see the wear and tear on fields over the course of a game.

Final Fantasy XIII is happy to make people wait a little longer, and it’s only after thirty hours of play that it opens up and begins to deliver the game many were hoping for.

Such a move shouldn’t be too surprising as this is a series that reinvents itself upon every new entry – that much, at least, is constant. Just as you can expect Chocobos, Summons and a side order of grinding so too can you expect new ways to fight, new worlds to explore and new ways in which to interact with them. XIII’s no different, and any notions that this is a return to the series’ tradition after the wayward son that was its immediate predecessor should be dismissed; this is just as radical a departure as the MMO-tinged Final Fantasy XII, and its extension and revision of the basic formula is likely to prove just as divisive.

It may not sound too far removed from the norm, but like much else in Final Fantasy XIII what’s really telling is the omissions. There are no MP points to speak of, with the ATB bar sharing the burden of both physical and magical attacks, while character’s status is instantly reset after every battle. The two things combined mean that the constant management of party members that past games have demanded has been stripped out completely – and it’s an edit that’s beneficial to the experience.

It leaves the emphasis firmly on the Paradigm Shift mechanic, something which has its roots in Final Fantasy X-2′s Dress system. Parties can change their class configuration at the touch of a button – come up against an enemy susceptible to magic and it’s possible to switch to Tri-Disaster, a combination utilizing three Black Mages (or Ravagers in Final Fantasy XIII’s unique parlance, wherein Paladins are called Sentinels, White Mages are Medics and Warriors are Commandos) to grind them down; receive a pummelling and it’s advisable to switch to Combat Clinic, with one Sentinel tasked with soaking up the damage while two Medics are placed on healing duty.
